Your crash structures point is very good, and something I did not consider. Modern crash structures do dissipate the energy and reduce the acceleration transmitted to the occupants in an accident.

If you see you’re about to be rear-ended, get off the brake and put the car in neutral. With less resistance to the impact you’ll be less injured inside the car.

Essentially, by subtracting the Thinking Time from the headstart, I used the Effective Braking Time, or how the time left for the driver to brake.

Thinking time is subtracted from the headstart time in the numerator of the fraction in order to give us the amount of time left for actual braking, or 0.33 seconds. That is what the ratio is based off of. In this way, the thinking time is still included in the calculation. Note, this is the thinking time of a driver
