I’d be a little more inclined to the reflection of reality angle if more of it took place off screen, where it could inform characterization without exciting the audience. It seems like premium shows revel in graphic depictions, while network shows and many movies lean toward attempted rape that results in no insights…

That’s one thing; because I’m pretty sure the cast didn’t think they actually crashed a helicopter with the actor in it and weren’t permanently traumatized. Springing sudden, intimate physical violence on somebody with no warning or preparation is assault, plain and simple.
