I've downloaded (and uploaded) frightful amounts of data (software, music, movies) through my universities connection and never once had a problem, but then every time I torrent I watch my VPN connection like a hawk, so as long as I have the patience to sit there I shouldn't have a problem.

BTGuard's VPN service works well, and it should make you a lot safer torrenting, but I have used VPN servers that are faster. Check out Ipredator.
