Remember a few years back the uproar when Harry Connick Jr was on a televised Australian talent show? An act came out in blackface and Connick got up and walked out. Even if it’s true that few in Australia knew about the history of blackface in the US, they should have figured it out after that incident.

There is nothing “harmless” about the depiction of Zwarte Piet in the Netherlands. The imagery is born directly from Dutch colonialism and references a ton of racist stereotypes of black people, both image-based (the skin tone and red-painted mouths) and “essence”-based (Zwarte Piet it’s supposedly a “mystical” being).

This is tame by Australian racism standards. You should hear the way these people talk.
