Re: John Mulaney

Given that Texans tried to erase Native Americans as a people I think thats a given.

So are American Indian tribes still pretty much erased from Texas history in this bill?

See that’s the trick. If he is never charged with a crime then it is not a disproportionate punishment.

Ever have several hundred dollars or a few thousand dollars on you? They’ll take that too, and the cost to recover it will exceed the amount taken.

Some people drive around with $87,000 on their wrist every day. Not the case here, but it’s not some fucking cops business why someone has it unless it’s clearly connected to a crime in progress.

I remember well when the Dems had to show that they were just as “tough on crime” as the GOP.

Went to an auction once with close to 100k- this was a concern but we had the receipts showing we withdrew it and all- I know they could still seize it but as white guys we were pretty safe

I’m American and yeah it makes no goddamn sense and is entirely an abuse of power

It comes from British maritime law, so you may want to check and see if Canada has any similar laws on the books. It’ll usually come in the form of seizing assets for tax debts. It’s technically a civil and not criminal seizure.

To be fair, $87,000 dollars in cash is essentially guaranteed to smell like cocaine, regardless of whether owner of the money personally uses.

Fun fact: Last year, cops took more from Americans than burglars did.

“the dog alerted” is the most widely used lie in law enforcement.

Exactly this. Very unlikely someone holding large amounts of cash and avoiding banks is on the up and up. If the child suppport story is correct then this guy got what he deserved. He did get his money back. Now everyone, including his wife, knows he can pay up.

Civil forfeiture is ALWAYS bad, because it happens regardless of a crime being proven and outside of due process.

“I left there confused. I left there angry,” Lara said in an interview with The Washington Post. “And I could not believe that I had just been literally robbed on the side of the road by people with badges and guns.”

Lara — a former Marine with tours in Iraq in Afghanistan — told the trooper that he hadn’t done anything illegal, but that he did have a bunch of cash in the car. He doesn’t trust banks and instead keeps his cash at home with his parents in Texas. Lara even had receipts proving that the cash was all his.”

I’m not condoning this behavior in any way, once they decide not to pursue charges, they should not be able to keep anything they seize from you.

With reporting like this it’s like you don’t even want the government and police to have other people’s nice things.
