As with all mid-budget action films, ‘Crank in Space’ = ‘Crank in a Warehouse, with a total of roughly 45-seconds’ worth of mediocre CGI establishing shots’.

I agree! I rather liked the way he provided a sharp relief against which to show Scully’s quite subtle character development: she’s still not as inclined as Mulder to leap to the wackiest explanation first, but she’s seen far too much to allow herself to rationalise away the genuinely strange when she encounters it.

That bag of ‘organic popcorn’ is a revealing touch, isn’t it? You can see the thought process: “We know that the people who are worrying about this are just a bunch of whiny hipsters (because we’ve bought into our own bullshit about ‘liberal elites’) - and they must be worrying about how it will impact them

If you like this sort of thing, find an edition of Tom Phillips’ ‘A Humument’ which has the same thing (with actual art instead of blacking out) for every page of a largely forgotten Victorian blockbuster novel (called ‘A Human Document’).
