The weird thing is, the powers that be (which aren't really all that powerful) in Anthem aren't really evil or cruel, they're just kind of inept and afraid. It's a bad comparison, but the "told my whole life I can only do one thing" stuff works pretty well with it.

Makes sense considering how utterly confused everyone is about what's happened in the past hundred years.
