Man, this is sad. Ghost Story has stuck with me like few other books have, genuinely frightening and emotionally exhausting.

Reread Ghost Story recently. A truly brilliant book - an incredibly effective ghost story that’s also about the art of telling ghost stories. The movie is not great. It would make a wonderful limited series. 

That seems like a fairly innocuous observation to me, if a little too colloquial: what am I missing?

I took his Masterclass on creative writing. You are not wrong in your initial impression. 

I’ve tried many times to get into Neil Gaiman’s work. But the smugness rolls off in waves and always puts me off. “Look at me, I’m telling important stories about mythology!”
