The only reason it’s a topic of discussion at all is because he’s decided to make it part of his “story” or his “journey” or whatever soundbite-friendly term you want to use.

I think the fact that he’s a very basic/generic white dude allows a lot of his fans to self-insert; he’s living a life that many of them dream of.
