There’s a lot of private money in seperate small ventures with novel approaches (Like Helcion energy and General Fusion). I honestly think one of them is going to produce a marketable reactor before ITER at this point.

I’m fascinated by companies like General Fusion that are taking some novel and decidedly lower tech approached to fusion. The whole “Steam pistons and liquid metal” concept seem to have merit.
