Do you know where you are getting the transaxle from? I've heard that the FWD transaxles out of 90s Subarus can be a good choice, but I've also seen STi transmissions with a plug put in where the drive shaft exits.

An EJ257 would work great for that application. If you just want a straight swap, that would work. You will have to relocate the intercooler, I think. The LS1 is quite a light engine, and the EJ257 does has the advantage of a lower center of gravity in that most of the block sits low. I think an LS1 is about the same weight as an EJ257 and it doesn't need the turbo exhaust piping. There just isn't a better package for swapping than an LS engine.
