One problem with that article that hasn't been touched on yet— basically, you're hoping he takes the other girl. If you're not the drunk one, you won't get raped, she will. We don't want anyone to get raped. We want the focus to be on no one getting raped, not on making sure it's someone else.

Well dear, drunk or sober, most of us do not have the wherewithal to attempt to physically fight off a rapist. That's a fun little fiction that might make people feel safe but that's not actually what happens to most of us. Most of us freeze. Drunk or sober.

My problem with Yoffe’s article is the way it was written. I think we should question drinking culture, especially on college campuses. It’s a huge problem that eats up all kinds of health resources and results in deaths and serious damage every year. But in that article (as I remember; I can’t look it up right now)…

Sober or drunk, you can punch a guy, but in a physical fight between a man and a woman or girl, the man will pretty much always win easily and the woman or girl will often be left with lifelong injuries. I wouldn’t call that a good strategy.

I couldn’t disagree more. Sexual assault exists whether there is alcohol or not. The entitlement of men over women’s bodies exists with or without alcohol. The second class status of women, the idea of women as possessions and objects, that is the basis of our abuse.
