I went to film school. The push toward or away camera work starts very early. In my Freshman production classes, male professors were constantly telling me how heavy the cameras were, how technical the field was. They steered me and my female classmates very deliberately to other roles.

It is a terrible problem. I cut my teeth as a cinematographer before transitioning to documentary production, and I still act as a DP on the films I direct. When my company has interns, we get so few that are women, and to my employer’s great credit, when there is a female candidate we bring her on board.
