Those Sherlock Holmes films were incredibly popular, I think the idea that they didn’t contribute to his stardom is incredibly suspect.

I hope so.  I was actually shocked at how unimpressed Knives Out left me.  Love Rian fully, but it was just very average which was weird to me with all the insanely good press and reviews.  

In fairness, this is not dissimilar from musical theater; and yet people not only recover but thrive from those beginnings.

I admit, my favorite Reed was likable - if still misguided - John Byrne Reed. This whole THE HEROES ARE REALLY THE VILLAINS thing has really worn on me since then.
