My experience tells me otherwise. Group dynamics tend to be pretty unique to each group. Generalizations like yours discount individual knowledge and experience. In other words, I don’t think that really applies here.

This is exactly what I learned. I was too lenient before this incident, success is fun right? But no perceived possibility of failure can lead to people stepping outside of the game, at which point, why bother?
The initial problem was that I was fudging too much really. I’m still pretty new to all of this. I’ve got a better understanding of when and how much to let people fail now.

Disagree. If your players are being arrogant asshats (in my experience it just takes one player who rolled high charisma IRL to lead the rest down the path blah blah blah) then you’re well within your rights to off the whole group.
