Mostly comics. Some video games. In the end, wishful thinking can generate a hell of alot more. But I always felt before they actually went for it, AVP started a huge buzz back then.....then Freddy vs Jason was guilty pleasure...

Who framed roger rabbit might be the only correct answer here. Just in terms of the cooperate hoops they had to jump through and the fact that they even ever got permission to have all the characters they did.
