Grief is an inherently selfish emotion. It literally is just about how you are affected by the death. That’s ok.

Death is honestly usually about the people who are left behind; they are the ones dealing with the death and the fall out and the aftermath. The dead person is... well, dead.

Eat Pray Love was my bible when it came out. I don’t understand the hate towards E.G., but especially at a time like this. Really disappointed in many of the comments on here.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of Gilbert’s, but selfishness is a pretty normal response to grief. You hurt so much that it’s hard to see beyond that pain. Her statement on that post at least seems pretty normal and inoffensive to me.

It’s actually hilarious because many of the the hate comments indicate that Gilbert makes everything about her, but when you HAVE to write how you can’t stand someone as a preface to feeling bad about their pain, you’re making it about YOU. I think that’s #irony :-)

I loathe this, or the similar phenomenon when a woman (initially wrote “someone” but let’s be real - this only happens to women) who’s not well liked does something good and praise of them has to be framed as “WELL OBVIOUSLY I HATE HER FOR (incredibly inconsequential thing) BUT SHE’S COOL HERE I GUESS.”

People love to throw hate at anything that gains quick popularity (particularly when that popularity is among women)

Immediate grief responses can be pretty self-oriented. Folks get pulled into their pain and longing when they lose someone they love: I want them, I miss them, I hurt. It’s overwhelming, to say the least.

It is interesting to see everyone mention how they can’t stand Gilbert. Which is totally fine, but just seems completely unnecessary to bring up in this context.

Everyone knows you don’t mention Sandra Lee in the cards. Otherwise someone might read it out loud, thus summoning her to the center of your tablescape where she won’t leave until she has imbibed every last drop of alcohol in your home, including your blood if you’ve already had a beer or two.
