Well, she was tortured as well.  Kinda, since apparently  makeup didn't want to spring for giving her bruising, split lips, and blood.  And apparently it's not just a "Let's not mar Elizabeth Mitchell's pretty face" kind of thing, since Miles got punched a few times and he got nothing to show for it either.

Personally, her ruthlessness and self-interest make her more of an appealing character for me, not less.  Monroe may be a dictator, but he acts like a stupid one.  Whereas Rachel seems firmly stuck in survival mode, which may make her the only halfway intelligent character on the show.

Besides the fact that it's Elizabeth freakin Mitchell and she's just as great as she was on LOST (and just as hot too, goddamn that woman is fit), yeah.  That Rachel is utterly ruthless even if she's not cruel makes me like her a lot.

You say "enjoyably unapologetic villains", I say "irritatingly cackling villains".  Yes yes, we get that the militia is EEEEEEVIL.

I dunno.  I would've been happy with a few more episodes of Jack getting psychologically tortured in that fishtank cell.

Does this mean that Tani can go die in a fire now?

Now, granted, said underlings actually had assault rifles, when Cartoon Villain Sergeant only had a knife.

Mitchell's character did try to murder Monroe with a pen in one of the earlier episodes.  Hopefully she gets another chance and succeeds this time, if only to free us from David Lyons' "acting".
