Well that seems like an unnecessarily aggressive response. I seem what I was trying to get at is that even older engines, designed with lower compression when fuel was of poorer quality can be tuned to take advantage of higher octane, modern fuel.

I had the ecu reflashed in order to increase both power and economy. The difference is substantial but in order to see the benefits it does require 98. The lowest available in Australia is 91 anyway I think.

Sorry, I meant the V8. I think it’s because it prevents pinging so you can add more timing to allow it to run more efficiently.

Actually my Range Rover Classic, with essentially the same engine in it runs much better on 98 RON here in Australia and my fuel consumption has dropped dramatically, easily offsetting the extra cost at the pump.
