That, I'm honestly not positive, but it seems mostly timing, but also position on the battlefield, position relative to your enemy, etc....

The gameplay is like most action-RPGs, button-linked melees, ranged attacks, magic, with the pace slowed considerably. The repetition is born out of the trial-and-error gameplay. Hack your way to something you can't beat a bunch of times til you figure it out, hack away til you get to the next tough task.

I'm sure the devs wanted to "see how the community/public reacts to..." what the devs provided the community for free, which was the Metro map.

Haven't played myself, but I've been watching my brother play Demon's Souls lately, it's not so much that the game is difficult, it is. It's that the game does not hold your hand and does not forgive mistakes. It's also pretty esoteric when it comes to instruction. If you enjoy repetitive
