How else are you going to defend yourself? If someone is coming at you wanting to mug you or just beat you up for the fun of it what would you do? If someone intends to harm me, others, or my property I can and will use whatever tool are at my disposal to do just that.

Two things:

Hunting is more than a sport for many. Many use it to supplement thief food supply. If it was truly a sport then they would just shoot them and leave. Hardly anyone does that.

You can measure depth just as well with visible. Infrared is used on kinect so you dont see the speckle pattern emitted by the kinect that allows it to measure depth.

Most vehicles would be dead in the street including ambulances and other rescue vehicles. No food would be delivered to stores. No radios or other communications short of smoke signals.
