I find it amusing how everyone is stuck on this ethics thing for autonomous cars. The circumstances where an autonomous car will be left with only two choices, kill person A, or person B, are SO remote that they don’t even warrant discussion, in my opinion.

Speaking as someone who works in auto parts manufacturing in the US, automation is indeed the name of the game. We have a subsidiary plant in Mexico. What they do with 7-10 people, we do with 2-3 because our facility is far more automated.

The actual reason is for NVH. There is typically a bunch of sound deadening material under them. Sometimes they even cover mass dampers.
They aren’t allowed to care about serviceability. If you saw all the “keep out” zones that are implemented because of crash regulations, heat, assembly line issues, shipping, worker safety, etc you’d be blown away. It’s amazing they fit engines and transmissions into anything anymore.
You joke, but most companies do actually have a “revenue” metric that design changes are weighed against. Finance might say that your “$50" change is worth $0, because realistically, how many people will actually pay more for a vehicle because of it? Or, because of the oddities of benchmarking, they might actually say…
