While I agree with the sentiment, the fact is that any kind of punishment is only going to build their resentment. If that’s their mental starting point, then everything they encounter will be interpreted only in terms of that mental starting point.

The only part of the economy they care about is the part that benefits them, right now. They’re engaged in a major cash grab. They could care less if the economy tanks once they’ve secured whatever it is they want (or become convinced that they’re immune to the effects of a bad economy).
