I’ve been to the SD zoo several times (when people are in town, it’s always a thing they want to do.) The enclosures that animals are kept in (including elephants, giraffes, lions, tigers, a FUCKING POLAR BEAR IN CALIFORNIA) are too small given the size of the animals.

The step you’re missing is that water conducts heat (or cold) better than either ice or air. Salting the ice makes it melt, keeping the frosty ice goodness and improving its cold-transferring properties.
