I think in terms of effect on society, and in terms of doing a thankless job, they are heroes, and certainly more deserving of respect and recognition (and discounts) than soldiers/sailors/marines who can also be good, middling, bad, or stellar, but whose cause is only dubiously linked to improving others’ lives.
