I think part of the issue is that the chattering classes live in cities where poverty has a black or brown face. This can contribute to some white people’s sense of superiority. However, discussing white poverty usually occurs as a deflection of black & brown poverty, rather than an important topic in its own right.

The national Pantsuit Nation focuses a lot on feelings, with some advocacy sprinkled in. I can’t speak for other local chapters, by I prefer mine because it focuses on action and less on someone’s Tears after they receive a brief Race 101 lesson.
