Was about to post something similar to your second paragraph, but less glamorous. Maybe playing RPGs tune your brain to numberchasing, so you try to get as many paperclips as you can.
Then the question could become whether you were drawn to RPG because you were less empathetic, or became that way because you played RPGs.
