I was listening to Joshua Johnson on NPR’s 1A this morning, and he brilliantly compared the monuments to t-ball participation trophies. He said why are we celebrating the losers? The pro-monument guy (Sons of the Confederacy member) was tongue tied. I cackled!

So 30 years aftet the Civil War, there was a national movement by a group called the United Daugters of Dixie to “heal” the nation by honoring these losers. They were instrument to dotting these participation trophies all over the country.
