didn't work for me. regardless, what i *really* want is a way to get a double-row of small icons in my quicklauch without expanding the already-large superbar.

And if it just doesn't work, and neither does sending a letter, then lodge a complaint at the better business bureau [www.bbb.org] (if that's warranted, of course). I've gotten satisfactory (albeit late) responses based on bbb complaints from companies who wouldn't otherwise give me the time of day.

So, are we talking server software or client software? Or the whole deal? Does "establishing" mean "setting up", or "establishing a connection, aka client software"? What does "maintaining" mean? I use NCP & Shrew to connect to my University's Cisco-based VPN, but probably wouldn't take that route if I were

@ElementOfChaos: How lame is that - in order to change word's default background, you have to change everything! it ends up changing the background of the search results in windows 7 for example - no thanks! I haven't figured out another way to change the default background in word and other proggies otherwise. Ugh.

!pinx is useful for keeping an eye on prices no matter what the store: [www.pricepinx.com] . They have a bookmarklet too.

@orlo: Yep! This is a often-overlooked aspect of bargain shopping. Here's a list of stores and their lowest-price guarantees: [www.pricepinx.com]

@lordargent: to each his own, i s'pose. i like those box charts - so i can see more than one directory level without clicking anything. For example, I can see that it's not just the "My Lectures" folder that's taking up space, but my "Science of Life" videos that are swallowing 20% of my drive. You have to make a

I don't doubt that normal reg cleanings have little impact. But if you've installed apps on your machine which don't uninstall cleanly and do nasty time-consuming things based on the registry (like loading dll's, or ie plugins, etc) even after that dirty unistall, I could imagine significant performance increases.

@lordargent: Treesize pro has a mosaic-plot kinda thing which is very intuitive. Not sure if the free version has that.

ok - now let's see if gvmax bites the dust like the short-lived GVXMPP did due to possible violations of Google TOS.

What's amazing to me is the companies that DON'T listen to catalog choice. They have half-baked stated reasons for not listening, but the main one must be that they want to mail crap to as many people as possible in the vain hope that something will catch someone's eye. Once shippers have to pay for the carbon

@psychiccheese: I've been tempted to reply to some offensive or otherwise not helpful posts at times, but I think it's LH's preference (excuse me for putting words in their mouths) that such comments be ignored rather than graced with replies (i think their words were something akin to, "don't reply to trolls"). Not

I think that manually (or via Panda) disabling autorun is still a good idea. There are certain "smart" devices that windows still allows to autorun, such as the *horrible* U3 crap, apparently (see [news.cnet.com]). I assume that disabling autorun will keep U3 from installing, but I'm not totally sure.

Note that, if you have the Tab Mix Plus add-on installed, you should set the tab previews there, instead of using browser.ctrlTab.previews in about:Config

@Bubarubu: Zotero hasn't yet killed EN, you're right. Once EN starts feeling the pressure, however, it will be interesting to see if they can speed up their development. If I recall correctly, Thompson's strategy in the past has been to buy their competition, and then sit on their haunches. That'll be hard to

@enormous: bummer! I didn't realize that. Maybe what Ahnduru suggests, sipgate, might work for you? Otherwise, what about making up some email address as a gmail "from" address for a domain that doesn't even exist? I don't know if interfax requires a confirmation email to be sent to it - I assume they do.

couple it with [interfax.net] (outbound, cheap, no monthly fees) and efax (inbound and free), and you have a no-print faxing solution. sweet.

@Bubarubu: I've found endnote's implementation of groups to be klunky, inflexible, and barely passing as usable. If you have 5 groups, maybe it works ok. If you have 50 - 100, then it's a pain. They've been very slow to implement groups (I've been a user since EN4 or so - starting back in 2003), and once
