There’s a David Sedaris story where he talks about his sister advising him that if he’s on the phone with someone and has to poop, just tell them you’re trying to open a jar. He then reflects on all the times she told him this when they were on the phone.
That’s probably true, though he was not nearly as progressive as he could have been, considering his background of supporting desegregation and racial equality as Governor-General of the Philippines.
