You don’t have to use every technique in the book, but you also don’t have to shoot a musical like a very expensive proshot either. You’re allowed to actually use what’s best about film when adapting a musical. Very often with recent movie musicals the visual language is very very dull in terms of shot composition or…
Stephen Sondheim spoke highly of this new adaptation before he died. I would also imagine as the sole surviving creator of the original he likely had to give some type of approval before this could get made. And in general Sondheim was a huge proponent of his works being reinterpreted for new audiences and eras - the…
I don’t want the idea of redoing Hollywood classics becomes a thing
Far as I’m concerned the 1606 Globe Theatre performance of “Macbeth” is the definitive version and anything else is a superfluous waste of time.
“stealing money from the clueless 1%”
I yearn for the day when a thing’s audience becomes sophisticated enough to distinguish between “I want more of the thing” and “I want more things that make me feel like the thing made me feel”
I mean, young girls have been attracted to famous twink boys since... the 50s?
He’s just a wee bairn!
It just looks like a fan film. That’s all.
I don’t think the reviewer was talking about the characters have a sense of detachment from their lives, but that the actors and direction have a sense of detachment from the material. Like they’re winking at the audience, rather than owning the setting. The anime certainly winks at the audience - just watch ‘Mushroom…
Obviously I haven’t seen the show yet, but this review did a good job articulating what felt ‘off’ to me from the trailer and promos - it’s that the show feels the need to *explain* itself. Just from lines like ‘Welcome to the Bebop’ or ‘Hey! The bounty is this way!’
I mean, the answer is that you think you want a live-action adaptation of an anime, but you extremely do not.
“Reviewer didn’t like something that I haven’t even seen but want to like = reviewer is dumb and bad.”
He gave it a C and I read the same review you did and it didn’t sound like he “hated” it or damned it.
My first thought was that he’s done a good job explaining why this show sucks.
Yeah but if you actually read the review, he gives a really damn solid explanation of why he “hates” this particular show and it’s worrying as hell. I already had low expectations, but after reading this I doubt I’ll bother.
I don’t think the problem is that Zhao and DuVernay are directors capable of only one good film. Directors have individual sensibilities and talents that often lend themselves to particular genres. Christopher Nolan is not likely to make a great slapstick comedy. Experience is also a factor — just like athletes and…
I won’t deny that as the director Zhao ultimately has to take a lions share of the credit/blame for the final product. But when the flaws of the film are flaws that are common to the 20+ films of the franchise that preceded it, I think it’s not unreasonable to figure that the producers are playing a major role in…
Sir this is an Eternals article
