I get what you're saying, and holy cow is this a thorny issue, but a big part of the problem seems to be that they can't be embarrassed using words. Like, their worldview is so warped and the community is so twisted and insular that it's become impossible. Any sort of bad press or tongue lashing they can dismantle

I think part of the problem (a big part for me personally) is the idea
of only being able to advance spiritually by paying for
classes/books/what have you and donating to the church. As others
have said, collection plates are voluntary and anonymous and there's no
repercussion (spiritual or otherwise) if you don't
