There's lots. Quarries are everywhere, you don't see them because they're required to have huge berms around them.

They would have mostly just landed on the benches, they're wider than they seem.

I gotta watch again but that seemed like a pretty big pit. Getting the fire down to the bottom would be a serious challenge. It's really hard to get how big they are on a TV screen, it's mind boggling.

An active pit, which this probably was if the road into it was usable and there was no water in it, would have had an explosives shack nearby. Blow out the road, put noisemakers along the edges and you've got an awesome zombie trap.
