You’re absolutely right in that some stuff has been poorly handled, such as Arya’s storyline, which was clearly meant as filler, waiting for her to catch up with the other characters. I thought she had a plan, that she was baiting the Waif, but nah, she got stabbed for being an idiot, which baffled me. Then we got a 5…

I’m kind of 50/50 on that point of view. Some of the best moments came from the books (Mountain vs the Viper, Red Wedding, Tyrion’s trial), but the show dumping some of the worst book moments (“I am of the night”, Daenerys’ diarrhea, Penny, where do whores go, etc etc) really improved it.

To be fair, planning/writing a battle is kinda difficult. But yeah, I’m really happy Sapochnik won too, and also the show. There’s no need for more proof that it doesn’t need the books anymore.
