100% agree. My first car was a ‘98 sedan and I drove it back to back with a ‘03 sedan and it was night and day. Never been super on board with the RSX either... 

Counterpoint: ‘96-’00 was the best generation of Civic because they were the last to be truly light flickable cars. In ‘01 they got slightly fatter, slightly safer, and lost the great suspension and low nose for macpherson struts and pedestrian safety.

And be extremely reliable, for years (I haven't checked lately) the Miata was at or near the top of the new car reliability ratings because it was simple and not a lot to go wrong.
