You would’ve lost money that first year if you got in right at IPO, and only made money if you held on past that, and that was definitely speculation/gambling. Nobody knew how big Facebook would be or that it would successfully monetize its user base (something few other social networks have been able to do).

This is very common, which is why they always say don’t invest right after IPO. The only people who get rich on IPOs are pre-IPO investors.
