Agreed - though I’d also add that ideally any add-ons are chopped and fried along with the meat and cheese so it’s all just a big gooey blob (exceptions being a cheese steak hoagie and a pizza steak).

To be fair, the missus orders cheesesteak with mushrooms all the time, and she’s never lived outside the Philly area. And I occasionally dig a cheesesteak hoagie, which usually includes mayo, and also has lettuce and tomato. So I don’t really think there are rules, as long as it’s a big cheesy meaty mess.
