I have been in a looooooot of physical fights and when alcohol wasn't involved, I generally kept my wits about me. Run, subdue, or call 911. I do realize people act in the heat of the moment though. I've been there.

Even in a bar room brawl between two men, there is such a thing as excessive force. If he felt he was in danger he could have restrained her, ran away, blocked her blows, and/or called 911 and filed a report.
