I think he rides the van from the precinct to the courthouse, where he spends the night (remember the sick guy/girl?) , he sees the judge, is denied bail, then rides the van to Rikers. I could be wrong, but that's how I remember it.

I believe they took him to the courthouse. They have holding cells in the courthouse.

Kudos to the entire cast, everyone is doing a phenomenal job. I find myself sympathizing with Naz's character, I wouldn't wish Rikers on my worst enemy. Definitely had to look away during the bathroom scenes, I just knew he was going to be shanked.

I'm from NY, Rikers is considered a jail not a prison. Those who can't afford or have been denied bail are usually (almost always) sent there until they are sentenced.
