Actually, he did play Captain Nemo in a 2005 made-for-TV version of "Mysterious Island." And he played Ahab in a 1998 tv "Moby Dick." But it looks like the Old Man and the Sea still eludes him…

You make a very good point that it isn't particularly funny, and yet it is trying to be. That is a significant failure. I guess I just never really think of it as a comedy — I think of it in the same category as People Under the Stairs and the like.

I didn't interpret the people under the stairs as being other tenants. Alice refers to them as Mommy and Daddy's other "children," who have been exiled down there for being disobedient. Given M&D's prejudices, I would assume those are primarily kidnapped white kids. And, to my knowledge, black people don't turn pasty…

I do think there should be some concern about the loss of the print production cycle for current events journalism especially. It's nice to have a system that more or less requires reflective writing as opposed to the largely unfiltered "streaming" of information which is where the vast bulk of online news reporting…

@avclub-dfd52e95b1a3116d7b6ee727e725e5de:disqus I wonder how much of the Economist's cache in America is directly related to it's being a British conservative-leaning outlet. It lets American liberals (like myself) feel like they're being open-minded and engaging with "the other side" without having to deal with the…

I can understand why NBT wouldn't be considered a good movie by a lot of people, but I'll confess to not really understanding what about it seems to inspire so much contempt amongst some. It's not incompetently executed (the production design is great, the performances are fine — unless you just really hate Chevy…

I have seen it, and I liked it pretty well. He's almost a little too lucid for my tastes — well, lucid isn't quite the right word, but I guess I like my crazy villains to be so fully immersed in their alternative worldview that they can't quite manage to mask it to the rest of the world, or even that they aren't quite…

@avclub-fec1b8d3fbc08f27a84e5a334d45bb5a:disqus Ah, I sort of misunderstood you; I thought you were arguing for the superiority of silent, enigmatic killers because "they're just crazy" isn't satisfying. But I see you're instead explaining the relative rarity of chatty fiends.
