Could the problem be that the film is still not actually all that widely released? Critics still have to have a theater in the local market showing it if they're going to review it.

@avclub-131799f66a96ee034181e8a54b4c0b49:disqus I'm not sure what we're disagreeing on (if anything). My point has just been that the main "distortion of facts" is the argument that slavery was just one out of many significant causes for the Civil War. I believe that is a distortion, and that the protection of the…

I'm kind of surprised that no big conservative donor has popped up to pay to put the film up on streaming for free. You'd think if it really had a message of vital importance to the voters, they'd be opening it up to as many viewers as possible.

"I'm not anti-Semitic. It's the Jews who are anti-Christian! The way they keep stealing our children and drinking their blood proves it!"

@HarbingerOfDuh That's all well and good, except that it's important to point out that as far as the Civil War goes, the grey areas have been exaggerated beyond all reason as a very deliberate attempt at political face-saving.

@avclub-ae0bc3d83dfd1e061dd1e06c624b232b:disqus I think you offer a valuable corrective to this gross generalization, but I can attest that in my Jackson, TN, high school American history class in 1994 or so, while we certainly covered slavery the emphasis was definitely on the idea that the Civil War was *really*…

Thanks for this recommendation. I just listened to the Temple of Doom and Willow episodes of The Book Was Better, and it's definitely going into my regular rotation. I love that they actually really stick to the material and get some good (and funny) observations out of it. I've gotten a little annoyed lately with how…

Of course, that kind of raises the Tommy Wiseau dilemma. How should an (amateur) artist feel about someone wanting to buy their sincerely made work in order to enjoy it ironically? (I realize, of course, that a lot of what shows up on Regretsy has not been made sincerely by naive artists but rather has been…

This is an interesting point; how do you feel about a site like Regretsy. Etsy is basically an internet craft fair. How mean is it to ridicule the work that appears on it? I don't think the power dynamic is really all that different, but the venue for this amateur work is global. If it's cruel to point and laugh at…

Shall we wait to see if Gentle Herpes shows up to explain to us how the racist ventriloquist is clearly the superior comedian, a consummate professional who knows exactly what material to serve up to this audience to make them laugh, whereas Kinane is an elitist who thinks he's better than everybody because he's…
