We’ve reached peak PC. Alert... peak-PC has been attained. Please report to your local safe space and check-in for skin tone measurement.
Yeah, no. There is no debate here.
I’m only angry because people never get the basic math through their thick skulls and keep writing stupid articles trying to convince us 1+1=37. I’m a real estate investor and landlord, so I’m actually arguing against myself, because I require others to be innumerate for me to make money... which has been scarily easy…
meanwhile, those renters who consider themselves “smart” are paying ever-increasing rent for the rest of their lives. Even after a downturn, those buyers who own their homes will be “rent free” after 30 years. Are you planning to live more than 30 years? I sure am!
Huh? Every apartment costs money to purchase and own. If you are talking about HOA fees of shared spaces, there is literally no difference between renting or owning since those same costs are fixed. Just like a neighborhood that has a community pool... everybody pays for its upkeep.
I think it’s almost cute that you used San Francisco as your example. Tha market is so entirely out of whack, using it as a general rule of renting vs. buying is laughable.
Yep, pretty much.
Those costs are getting paid no matter what. Don’t think that you’re avoiding those costs if you’re a renter. You’re not. At least as an owner, you can negotiate your own contractors, insurance plans, etc.
Not a good point. If a landlord is struggling with not making a profit because of repairs, then they clearly are not charging enough in rent to cover those costs.
Stop it! Just stop it! Every time you guys try to write an article about renting vs. buying, you get schooled in the basic mechanics of personal finance. NO LANDLORD is in the business of losing money or providing you with a cheap way to live out of the goodness of their heart. Every single expense you could think of…
Cool idea, but the site is laughably sparse. I see about 8 pieces of furniture listed... TOTAL. I could rattle off over 30 off the top of my head and I’m not even an expert.
...or do what I do and buy one of these and blast it with 2000 degrees of pure crusty goodness (one minute per side):
This is decided science. After thousands of test eggs, Serious Eats has the definitive answer:
Anything that guarantees that you will live for free 30 years from now is of course an investment. Life-long renters are fools who mistakenly think they are not paying mortgage, interest, taxes, maintenance, HOA fees, etc. THEY ARE PAYING, believe me. No landlord rents out their property for a loss out of the goodness…
(sigh)
Will someone please get Guy Fieri to stop posting his stupid “trailer chic” recipes on this site?
No. No it’s not.
All you did is propose a new name for CONFIRMATION BIAS. Nothing new here.
As a former Tetris addict and life-long competetive chess player (had a lot of success as a kid—our school won nationals twice in a row, I personally took 2nd place in state), I completely disagree with this analogy. Chess is FAR more “lifelike” than Tetris. It’s not just about strategy against an opponent, chess…
