Season 1 was a slow burner and I definitely preferred Season 2. I agree on Season 3 and the flashbacks. As For the tone it depends on personal taste, and since there are already ‘cheerful’ superhero tv shows like the Flash I won't mind a show a bit gloomier...but in the end even in the Arrow the heroes still win.
