This is exactly how I feel about economics as a discipline, complete with the fetishistic focus on empiricism to the exclusion of contextual frameworks that actually clarify the data and make it usable in real-life situations, which are far too complex and involved to model in the same vein as physical systems.

And to really drive his point home, in case it wasn’t already obvious enough, the female character at the top is a chick with a dick.

Oh, he’s an adjunct? Yeah, he’ll be fired by noon tomorrow, if not sooner. He’s basically a temp.

Wtf

You don’t realize that these things (reform and winning) are related? In order for Democrats to win, we have to turn out the people who sat at home in 2016, i.e. the working class, especially communities of color. Why did they sit at home? It’s simple: the perceived benefits of voting were not high enough to overcome

I think this article and this thread are prime reasons why the Republicans are probably going to continue to dominate for the foreseeable future. This is the wrong time to worry about this. We need to focus on winning. Who gives a shit about corporate interests and moral high grounds. We’re on the cusp of having

Don’t bother arguing with them. They live in a fantasy world where things like “The Supreme Court” aren’t a good enough reason to support a candidate who may not be perfect, but is still light years better than the alternative.

Keep telling yourself that when a right wing Supreme Court decides to torpedo Roe V Wade and a whole shitload of other progressive laws.

There is only one answer for 2020.

Clearly the answer is for disillusioned liberals to protest against the Democratic Party by voting for Jill Stein, because THAT worked out so well last November.

Orthodox Jews have decided to live their lives by having a fence around the laws of the Torah, and this is what leads to many of the “laws” they have. Is it something I would choose? No, but I have a great deal of respect for them and making the sort of jumps that you are claiming essentially represents an embrace of

That is a total canard. As an Orthodox Jewish male, I can assure you that we have sex in much the same manner as any other married couples do.

As another non-US person I also am baffled by all of this. I mean, I also have three forms of photo ID and I get asked for them all the time. There are plenty of businesses that won’t sell their services to me without valid ID. Can’t get a credit check, can’t do anything without proving I am who I say I am.

Many of us who are against the voter suppression efforts of the modern Republican ID / poll tax efforts are for a national voter ID given freely to all citizens at birth or upon naturalization.

Well, short of us here having mandatory IDs, the same applies here. If I need to renew it, it’s something like $100, and a passport (I can use either to vote) is over $250. I’ve never attempted to vote with a driver license, I’d say it’s possible some European countries allow it (I’d bet mine most probably doesn’t.)

Well let’s take some examples. In Argentina for instance, where voting is compulsory, your voter ID card is issued at birth as a form of Birth Certificate (which is a separate thing here. This ID is the equivalent of 5 loaves of bread to purchase for the parents and is required by law. In America that ID would cost 10

Personally I think voting is important enough that a slight hurdle to get an ID is a good thing. I think the ID should be easy, free and obviously useful in other ways. Those who don’t want to be bothered don’t have to vote. It’s not a literacy test and it’s not about voter fraud but more about caring what the vote is

My comment here is not to troll, but to get an elucidation

This is a great response, but I just wanted to highlight something you said that may come off the wrong way to someone who may not be as familiar with the geography of the USA:

I’ve asked the question before, but was in the greys so maybe no-one ever saw it, so here goes:
