Right. Except, if these slaves had been immigrants they would have been paid, and they would have been 10x more productive, which would have expanded the GDP by a ton.

Right? ASU has 80,000 students from well over 100 countries with an undergraduate enrollment of 50% POC. Not exactly a bastion of white separatism.
Right, but my point- which sprung from an admittedly silly historical meditation- if taken to a logical extreme, would sort of take those factors into account.
Yes, that’s correct.
If instead of holding slaves, the US southern states had encouraged one million West Africans to come to the US as immigrants, we’d perhaps be 100 years ahead both financially and technologically.
I do think that very often people read The Root and miss the satire peppered here and there into the articles. Some, because they’re so busy being outraged that they miss the point, and others because they’re too concrete to understand satire.
It’s horribly racist and certainly hateful, but not sure it’s a crime as nothing was technically destroyed, vandalized, etc. Although, one could argue that this is intimidation, I suppose.
Yup- you got it! Bananas are very low hanging fruit (no pun intended) for those wanting to get in a cruel racist dig.
Temple is about as much of a HBC as Boston University. Meaning- not at all.
There are no Nazis speaking at Berkeley. The alt right hates Ben Shapiro- he’s been actually be attacked by the alt right more than any other public figure in the history of the alt right.
Ben Shapiro is a traditional conservative who actually believes in the positions he takes- he’s not a troll. Milo is a troll who admits to being a troll.
I think that’s something that needs to be explained more clearly to people. We would pay higher taxes under any national healthcare system, yes, but if this were done correctly, there would be no paycheck deductions or deductibles. And, paperwork would pretty much vanish.
Yes, and there are around 20 different models of single payer insurance around the world.
I agree, but the details will have to be ironed out, and it may take more time than some would like.
Not quite true. The number of billionaires, or “oligarchs,” in the US is tiny in numbers, but there are 100 million in the upper middle class, households earning over $100,000 a year, most of whom “have it pretty good right now” when it comes to healthcare. And, there are another 100 million in the middle class, who…
Many in the progressive wing of the party believe in neither compromise nor incrementalism. And, they have a right to see how these ideals work out for them in the reality of modern politics.
It’s very interesting, as there are many great healthcare models out there, all of which are quite different, but yet very effective- Switzerland, Taiwan, Canada, Norway, etc. Not all are actual single payer, but they all fall under the single payer umbrella.
Medicare for all is a starting point which will likely lead to negotiations and jockeying over these issues. I see a Medicare buy in option as far more likely to succeed in the short term.
Medicare for all is a starting point which will likely lead to negotiations where different ideas and models will be tossed about until we finally figure out something that can pass Congress and works.
Expressing her distaste for Trump is one thing, but perhaps the teacher shouldn’t have told the students that their shirts were “not allowed in the class” without first getting approval from the school administration and a lawyer who specializes in First Amendment issues in the public sphere.
