HOW MUCH of this, I wonder, is due to flash photography? In other words, perhaps the contouring looks fairly normal in person but a little grotesque under a flash bulb. This would be much like Makeup Forever's ironically named HD powder, which looks like this under the flash bulb. A few examples:
