I love Thompson's books. "After Dark My Sweet" and "The Getaway" are probably my favorites, but "The Criminal" was one hell of a surprise. I was not expected a Rashamon style tale that was tragic and human.

The point was that this movie isn't just a noir pastiche or something playing around with the steamy but superficial aspects of film noir; this is the real deal. This really is a movie about obsession and human weakness.
