I tried my darndest to get that dull oxidation off with soap, water and a microfiber towel... So I snagged some chrome cleaner, and after seemingly endless rubbing, the plastic chrome started to look a bit better.

Actually the oil often wicks up the exhaust header threads since some of the studs go into oil passages. Remove the header and studs, add some red rtv, reinstall, and Bob’s your uncle.
