It’s a progressive school because that’s what they call themselves. It’s progressive in education as opposed to traditional (top-down academic) schools. “Progressive” in this case refers to a stance towards education, which yes, does include a diversity initiative. It does not mean “progressive” in a political context.

But if there are all kids of color in one classroom, they won’t necessarily “share racial, ethnic, linguistic cultural backgrounds.” The only thing they share is that they aren’t white. 

It’s not like they can have one class of 39 white kids and 1 class of one minority kid. The school doesn’t have enough diversity as it is. Putting them all in one room doesn’t solve that problem.
