That woman’s job is fitness. It’s not like she has another job that she must go to, and then get fit around that. If your job is to be a fitness model, then you should look the part, right? That’s my excuse (not working in fitness) and I’m sticking to it!

My daughter does this as well. I’ve seen very few “Toddler & Tiara” moms on set. But pageantry is different from kid modeling or acting. Very often, someone has selected your child from a photo or from a one-minute audition, so it’s all largely out of the child or mom’s hands. And no amount of hairspray and glitter is

Wow, I’m going to create a folder like that. Thanks!

The handmade font on the banner is super impressive!

That happened at our school. The valedictorian in 1987 LAUSD was a kid who took zero AP classes and I was in five of them, so I know he didn't take the 5 I was in.

Bravo for this.

You like New Girl over The Mindy Project? When Jess and Nick got together and Schmidt's role was relegated to empty sidekick, it went downhill. And then they had to introduce Coach back in as some sort of life-raft for the dwindling story lines. I have 10 episodes saved on my DVR and only go to them as a last-resort.

So true! Thanks for stating that. There are plenty of shows where there is little or no diversity, why focus on Dunham and Kaling's shows?

I know what you mean. I look at my daughter and think about what will happen to her. On the one hand, teachers have told me that my daughter doesn't need a lot of external validation from others and she in her own right (at 5) a pretty tough cookie. She does not harbor fools well, so I think she'll be okay. If this

I don't even have to read your entire post to Star you! You go on with your bad self!

Yes, I definitely think that Asian women are complicit in their own fetishization and Asian women should reflect on how their own attitudes and behaviors perpetuate negative stereotypes about them.

"Ultimate assimilationists" can really be an insulting phrase, as if that's what Asians strive to do. I would say that there are some generalized traits that Asians may have (grit, strong work ethic) that allow them to "make it work" and fit in in the U.S., but that doesn't necessarily mean we assimilate well.

You are awesome!

And, really, it's not a good look.

Love your "false beauty" line. That is perfect for describing all the women on "Real Housewives of Whatever."

Lemme guess. Is it the straight-ish hair, very made-up, jeans with a flirty top look? With heels or boots? Gorgeous, but not edgy?

Omigod, so true. I know exactly of which you speak. Tim Gunn calls it the "slobification of America."

Men may 'think' they have the freedom to be ugly, but they don't. Who is looking at the guy in sweatpants with a shirt two sizes too large? Although the article talks more about women bucking the pretty trend, a disheveled, unkempt man is not a prize. Men shouldn't be exempt from the tyranny of pretty.

If we're all going to play the pretty game, men shouldn't be exempt. I don't mind putting on makeup and heels, because it's fun, but I also work at home, so don't "need" to look a certain way for a job. But, I do expect men to pull themselves together too. Men can't walk around in sweatpants and shirts two sizes

If you read Baker's article about Steubenville post-rape trial, you discover that no one in the town learned anything at all. They are still blaming the victim, and are relieved that it's 'all over.' The wagons remained circled.
